TABASCO

Located in the Gulf coast region in southern Mexico, Tabasco has a tropical climate, fertile terrain, mountains, rivers and lagoons surrounded by lush vegetation.

 Here you can visit Villahermosa, the state capital, a modern and culturally rich city with beautiful parks, such as Parque-Museo La Venta, where you’ll see numerous Olmec archaeological pieces and a beautiful zoo. You can also visit Parque Tomas Garrido Canabal and the Carlos Pellicer Museum of Anthropology. This city also hosts an interesting carnival with floats, music and masked dancers, and in April it offers the Celebracion del Mes de Abril, a showcase of Tabasco’s most splendid crafts.

 

Where is located

The state is located southeast of Mexico and stretches along the coastal plain of the Gulf of Mexico, with its southern portion of the mountains of northern Chiapas. It is bordered on the north by the Gulf of Mexico, south to the state of Chiapas, on the east by the state of Campeche and the Republic of Guatemala and the west by the state of Veracruz. 


 

How to get there

Highway 180 links Villahermosa to Coatzacoaicos, Veracruz, which is west, and to Ciudad del Carmen and the city of Campeche, in the state of Campeche, which lie 175 km (108 mi) and 356 km (220 mi) northeast, respectively. Villahermosa has two bus terminals that offer service on lines UNO, GL and ADO. Carriers operating out of the city’s international airport include Aeromexico, Mexicana, Aerolitoral, Aerocalifornia, Aviacsa and Continental Airlines.



Villahermosa International Airport – Located at Km 13 on the Villahermosa-Macuspana Highway, in Rancheria Dos Montes’ Colonia Centro.

Weather

Villahermosa, the state capital of Tabasco, is located in the Gulf Coast region, in southeastern Mexico. It lies in a zone that gets heavy annual rainfall. The climate is humid and tropical, with an average year-round temperature of 25º C (77º F), however it can reach up to 40º C (104º F) in the summer.


Things to do and see


Malpasito archaeological zone.
Located one kilometer from the town of Malpasito to 27 km from the town of Huimanguillo. Zoque unique archaeological site open to the public. In this ceremonial center, more than 60 petroglyphs, and important buildings among which there is a large square, the ball game with a bathhouse and a sunken courtyard.



La Venta archeological site. Here is the oldest pyramid in Mesoamerica, the remains of one of the major cities of the Olmec culture. Here you have found a lot of tracks: Ajuarios jade funerary, stele with figures of rulers and of course the famous colossal heads.



Pomona Archaeological Site. This is the ceremonial center of a Mayan city, is built on small hills formed by 6 sets of buildings, three of them stand around a large square with a central shrine, has a museum open from Monday to Sunday from 10: 00 to 17:00 hrs.



Comalcalco archaeological zone. The only Mayan city in Mesoamerica built with bricks of clay, together with a mixture of sand and oyster shells, originated in the late classical period. Three architectural groups are included in the main area of Comalcalco: Plaza North, Great Acropolis, Acropolis East. From the style of the monuments, see a great influence of Palenque. Comalcalco found in various tombs and temples with stucco reliefs, among which the Temple VI, with a large mask representing Kinich Ahua "Lord of the Solar Eye." The area includes a museum that shows the urn from the ruling Ak-Pakaltán "Lord of Fire."


Archaeological Zone Reform. Located 2 km from the Ecological Reserve Falls Township Balancán Reform. Mayan archeological site where you can visit six magnificent stelae, altars and four interesting. It has seven large-scale buildings, three middle and several small and a ball game. Many of the stelae found there can be admired at the Museo José Gómez panaceas in the city of balance.


La Venta Park Museum. Ecoarcheological only park in America, displays in a forest environment and outdoor, monumental, colossal heads, stelae and altars majestic of the Olmec culture and now invites you to enjoy its attractive sound and light show. Museum Hours: Tuesday to Sunday from 8:00 to 17:00 hrs. Hours of Light and Sound Show: Tuesday to Sunday 19:00, 20:00 and 21:00 hrs

Villahermosa has numerous malls if you’d like to go on a shopping spree. In the Centro Tabasco 2000 you’ll find Galerias Tabasco 2000, a shopping center that has a wide variety of department stores, boutiques, restaurants and much more. In the same area you can visit other malls, such as the Plaza Comercial Usumacinta, Plaza D’Atocha Mall, Plaza Olmeca and Plaza Tabasco, among others. Other shopping centers in the city center and its surrounding areas include the Plaza Catedral, Plaza Cristal, Plaza La Hacienda, Plaza Las Americas, Plaza Las Galas, Plaza Sur and many more. At these places you’ll find clothing stores, crafts shops, restaurants and family entertainment centers.
